Browsers are programs used to browse (or surf) the world wide web. They interpret the contents of web servers and present it in a human-readable form. Most people will have heard of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and it is this language that browsers understand. There have been many extensions to the original HTML specifications (They have different acronyms too!) but plain HTML is still the basis of most web sites. You can create your own web pages with a little knowledge, Notepad and a lot of time! If you are interested in learninfg more of HTML visit www.w3.org/MarkUp you will find lots of information to bamboozle yuo

Internet Explorer

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is the browser supplied with Microsoft Windows* it is by far the most popular browser for web browsing. Any web-site that wants to keep its visitors must be compatible with it. Of course like all software (it seems) Internet Explorer has it’s problems it has been blamed for all sorts of nasties finding their way onto computers worldwide. Microsoft are continually addressing these problems. To keep up to date, and therefore be as safe as possible, you should regularly visit www.windowsupdate.com to check if you need to download and install fixes and improvements for Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is an alternate free to download web browser it has very similar features and functions to Internet Explorer. One advantage of thunderbird is that it supports a technology known as “Tabbed Browsing” - Instead of opening new windows for each new link that you visit it simply adds a new tab-page in the current browser window. It has also been touted as a safer web browser than Microsoft’s offering, but for many the jury is still out. For more information on Thunderbird visit www.mozilla.org

AOL

AOL is really an internet access suite rather than a plain browser AOL normally arrives through your letterbox un-asked for! AOL claims that it provides a safer browsing experience linked with parental and access control systems. The downside is that it tends to dominate your computing experience, assuming that you want to do everything the “AOL way”. You cannot use AOL unless you sign up with AOL as your internet and email provider for a monthly fee.

If you are interested you can sign up at the AOL website at www.aol.co.uk

There are other browsers available such as Netscape and Opera but the above represent about 90% of those in regular use.
