Email Client software is a program that collects mail from a internet-based mailbox. The mail box is normally provided by an ISP as part of an internet access and connection package, The email client contacts the mailbox server across the internet (via dial-up or broadband) gives the server your email address, account details and password and then downloads the emails to your local computer. There are variations on this theme but those are the basics. When you send mail much the same happens but the mail is uploaded to the server for passing onwards to your contact’s server so that they can download it. Simple. In fact so simple that as we all know the system is open to abuse and we are bombarded with mail we didn’t ask for offering things we don’t want to buy!

Outlook Express

Outlook Express is an email client provided with Windows* XP it is fairly simple to setup and use. It works with most ISPs and does not have any compatibility issues. One restriction with Express is that there is no spelling checker unless you have Microsoft Word installed as well. Word is available seperately or as part of the Microsoft Office Suite and as part of Microsoft Works Suite.

Outlook

Express is the little brother of Outlook, Outlook expands on email to include reminders, calendars, meeting notes, appointment management and more. Some of the features of outlook are not available unless you are connected to Microsoft Exchange Server. Outlook is available seperately or as part of the Microsoft Office Suite.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird is an alternate email client available for free download from www.mozilla.org again it is fairly simple to setup and use. It works with most ISPs and does not have any compatibility issues. Advantages over Outlook Express are a built in spelling checker and a built in self-learning junk mail filter.

 AOL

AOL is really an internet access suite rather than a plain email client AOL normally arrives through your letterbox un-asked for! AOL does contain junk mail and virus control systems. The downside is that it tends to dominate your computing experience, assuming that you want to do everything the “AOL way”. You cannot use AOL unless you sign up with AOL as your internet and email provider for a monthly fee.

If you are interested you can sign up at the AOL website at www.aol.co.uk
