Open Office has been written and is maintained by a co-operative of people and programmers who collaborate using the internet. Literally hundreds of people have contributed to it’s extensive features. If you feel brave you can actually change parts of Open Office to suit your specific needs. I’m not saying that it is simple or indeed actually desirable to do this, but the ability to do so is there because you can download the source code - the actual software instructions that make up open office - and edit and re-build it yourself. If your changes are innovative you can submit them to the web site and they could be incorporated into the suite for others to use.
This is just not possible with Microsoft’s product the source code for their office suite is fiercely protected as their intellectual property. Plus of course the Microsoft’s product can cost hundreds of pounds to buy.
