USB or “Universal Serial Bus” first developed in the mid 90’s USB took a while to take off but is now a truly universal standard and universally used in Personal Computers.

The original USB connections had a transfer speed of only 1.5 Megabytes(Mb) per second while the later USB 2 connection has a maximum transfer speed of 480 Mb. per second.

USB is used for many peripherals such as printers, scanners, cameras and of course the iPod and other MP3 music players.

If your computer is operated with Windows XP (Home or Pro) new USB devices are automatically detected and some, such as pen drives and external disk drives, will work without software drivers. Other devices will need software to enable them to operate This is normally supplied by the manufacturer of your device and will typically be on CD-ROM.

For further information on the USB technical specifications see the USB Implementers Forum Web Site at www.usb.org
