n the early days of home computers the “Operating System”, such as it was, consisted of a collection of similar types of software instructions to those used today, but usually fixed into the computer when it was manufactured. This software (or more correctly firmware) enabled very simple and fundamental operation of the computer’s electronics. It performed very simple operations such as setting up the electronics ready for initial operation, accepting keystrokes and then displaying the typed characters on the screen. In conjunction with this a programming method, generally BASIC was also included but again fixed into the computer. The result was a whole generation of people trying to program their shiny new toy to get it to do something useful!
